Guitar and Ukulele

The Mid-West Vocal Academy & Music School we are pleased to offer instruction in classical, acoustic and electric guitar as well as the ukulele.

The guitar was developed in or around the 16th century. It is a fretted musical instrument that typically has 6 strings. It is played by strumming with the strings with the players dominant hand. Different notes are sounded using the fingers of the other hand to press the strings against the frets. There are three types of guitar; Classical, Acoustic and Electric. The classical guitar is nylon string and typically played by plucking the strings rather than strumming them. The acoustic guitar has steel strings. Both the classical and acoustic guitar have a hollow body acting as a resonating chamber. The electric guitar can be solid as it is usually attached to an amplifier which is used to project its sound.

The ukulele was developed in the late 1800’s and introduced to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants. It is now largely considered a Hawaiian musical instrument. It is similar construction to a guitar, but has a much smaller body and four nylon strings. Its generally plucked rather than strummed. It can be considered a good starting instrument for young musicians who often then progress on to playing guitar.
